Pfluagziachn - Plough pulling in Stelvio

Description

Plough pulling is another custom carried out every second year in Stilfs. The former life of the farmers is depicted on stage. On the one hand the peasant’s closeness to their ground is exemplified and on the other hand their complex social interweavement and dependence are shown. Plough pulling is an ancient play mirroring the battle against the force of nature. The end and parting of winter is outlined as well as the beginning of the blessing and prosperous period of spring. The procession through the village raises on the one hand hope for the prosperous harvest
