Lost and Rediscovered Species
The South Tyrol Museum of Natural History is currently updating the Red List of the vascular plants of South Tyrol. Research on threatened species has yielded new insights into the losses and rediscoveries recorded over the past 20 years. These findings will be presented in a German-language lecture on 20 November at the Museum of Natural History.
The first Red List of the vascular plants of South Tyrol was published in 2006 by the Museum of Natural History under the direction of Thomas Wilhalm and Andreas Hilpold. Of the approximately 2,500 recorded species, more than 3% were considered missing or extinct, while an additional 27% were classified as endangered. Species from wet habitats, dry meadows, and agricultural land were particularly affected. The main driver of these threats was identified as the intensification of agricultural practices.
As flora continually evolves and pressures from agricultural and tourism intensification, along with human-induced climate change, continue to affect vulnerable species, the Museum of Natural History is now reassessing the current status of the region’s flora. Research already conducted on selected species has produced numerous new findings, which will be incorporated into the forthcoming second edition of the Red List.
Elias Spögler, a botany student at the University of Innsbruck, will present the current situation as well as species that have disappeared or been rediscovered over the last two decades. His presentation, held by the South Tyrolean Flora working group and titled “Aktion Nachsuche – Verlorenes und Wiedergefundenes aus unserer Südtiroler Flora”, is scheduled for Thursday, 20 November at 6 p.m. at the South Tyrol Museum of Natural History.
