Eschio

Together with the main village, Eschio forms the municipality of Verano on the low mountain ridge between Bolzano and Merano

The tiny Eschio (Aschl) is one of the two districts of Verano, a sunny holiday destination on Mount Montezoccolo. The scattered farms that are enthroned on the slopes above the Rio Eschio stream are also part of it. Already in the 13th century, the area was known as excellent terrain for arable and cereal farming, but its history goes back even further. Pope Urban III confirmed in the 12th century that Verano belonged to the Augustinian canons' monastery of Au-Gries. It is the present-day Muri-Gries Monastery in Bolzano, which houses a nativity scene museum.

On the sunny side, the west side of the low mountain ridge, you can explore the area on foot: A pleasant hike leads from the centre of Verano to the scattered settlement of Eschio. The little church there is dedicated to St. Anna. There are also several chapels at the Töt, Gassen and Ödengut Farms in the municipality of Verano.

The Montezoccolo is an attraction at any time of year, the landscapes change seasonally. Spring begins here at more than 1,200 m a.s.l. a little later than down in the Adige Valley, where the apple trees are in blossom. Then comes summer with its pleasantly spicy air, which is revitalising even when the temperatures in the Valle dell'Adige valley are much higher. Autumn enchants with the colourful larch forests and in winter the snow comes. Then the Merano 2000 Ski Area in the neighbouring municipality of Avelengo invites you to sunny skiing days and sledging adventures.
