Termeno village

The village of Termeno, located at 276 m asl, offers a series of historical buildings that are interesting from a historical and artistical viewpoint. The S. Quirino and Guiletta parish church occupies the main square, so to speak the centre of Termeno. By the way, with 86 metres of height it is the church steeple with the highest church tower of Tyrol. Worth visiting is also the small but mighty Romanesque church S. Giacomo a Castelaz that can be found slightly above the village on a winehill. In this place, in antiquity there was a Roman cult site to the honour of the goddess Isis.

The Local Museum of Termeno provides an insight into the vivid past of this rural area. Moreover it exhibits traditional masks and figurines used in the so-called "Egetmann" Carnival parade, such as the "Schnappviecher" or the "Burgeletreiber". This Carnival tradition is well-known throughout South Tyrol and also beyond borders and takes place every second year on Shrove Tuesday.

A further attraction is Castel Rechtenthal. The baron Franz S. Von Unterrichter had this castle constructed in the mid 19th century, today it hosts a vocational training academy for teachers.

Our tip: the most ancient part of the centre is called Betlemme (Bethlehem). The alleys and buildings in this locality are particularly picturesque and absolutely worth seeing.
