Viewed from above, the houses of Ferrara (Schmieden) look like the entrance to the village of Sesto, and those of Moso like its end. In fact, they are three separate hamlets of the municipality, lined up one after another in the Valle di Sesto. Ferrara itself consists of only a few buildings.
The Via Dolomiti road runs alongside the Rio di Sesto stream, where otters have recently been spotted again, and has a bus stop, while the Via Ferrara takes you further into the valley. The small hamlet is the starting point for exploring the Sesto Dolomites and the Three Peaks Nature Park, which until a few years ago was still called the Sesto Dolomites Nature Park.
In winter, the walking paths become popular cross-country ski tracks. One particularly beautiful route leads from the "Alte Säge" (Old Sawmill), through the snowy landscape, to Ferrara at an altitude of almost 1,300 metres, and continues to the Waldheim recreational area near San Vito.
A few kilometres past Ferrara, the side valleys of Sesto, such as the Val Fiscalina and Val Sasso Vecchio, branch off. From here, hikes start to the alpine pastures on Mt. Croda Rossa, to the Nemes Hut, the Tre Scarperi Hut, and all the way to the famous Three Peaks of Lavaredo. Mountain bikers also value the area for its trails: One of these is the Demut Trail, the queen stage of the Stoneman Trail on the Carnic Ridge. It is a challenge that is rewarded with unique views.
