Walking along the old Val Gardena Railway:
From 1917 until 1960 the Val Gardena Railway “ferata de Gherdëina” drove through the whole Val Gardena valley. The train route was built by 6.000 Russian prisoners of war in 5 months only. During war, the Val Gardena Railway was mostly used to transport war goods, after World War II the railway became more and more interesting for tourists and wood carving transportation. After 44 years of train operation, the service was suspended on the 29th of May 1960.
