FAI Spring Days 2026

On the Trail of the "Lost Castle": FAI Spring Days 2026
On March 21st and 22nd, let yourself be guided through an urban adventure that will take you back centuries. In the province of Bolzano, the FAI Spring Days open the doors to places where time seems to have stood shorthand, revealing secrets kept for generations behind everyday facades.
Saturday, March 21st and Sunday, March 22nd: The Mystery of Castel Wendelstein (Bolzano) Did you know that an ancient castle is hidden beneath the street level of Bolzano and within the walls of a modern school? This is your chance to discover Castel Wendelstein, a fortress that no longer exists as a single entity, but lives on "set" like a precious jewel between the Capuchin Church and the "Hannah Arendt" School.

  • A Journey Through History: Imagine returning to Roman times: coins, brooches, and pottery have been found here, along with a thick wall—perhaps part of a public building. Could it be the legendary station of Pons Drusi? What is certain is that a strategic bridge over the Isarco River has stood here since ancient times. The tour will lead you through a labyrinth of eras: from the underground archaeological excavations to the 17th-century cloister.
  • Curiosities and Artistic "Censorship": Along the way, you can admire the splendid Knights' Hall, featuring secular frescoes and chivalric scenes. In the convent area, you will come face-to-face with the benefactor of this site, E. D. Wolkenstein, and a 17th-century altarpiece with an incredible story. The original painting, depicting a "theological brawl" too lively for the friars of the time, was literally censored and repainted! Only a modern restoration brought the original scene back to light.
  • For Little Explorers: This isn't just for adults. At 11:00 AM and 4:00 PM (both Saturday and Sunday), children can join a Scavenger Hunt to discover the secrets of the lost castle while having fun.
