Legend: The Pale Mountains

There is also a legend about the love between a prince and a moon princess in the Dolomites

Once the realm of the Dolomites was a true paradise: Green meadows, lush pastures, a sea of flowers and crystal-clear mountain lakes characterised the landscape. In between, countless bird calls could be heard. Here reigned a king whose son fell in love with a moon princess and finally married her. The love was great, but the prince could not bear the gleaming moonlight of his beloved, and feared for his eyesight. The Moon Princess, on the other hand, could not bear the sight of the gloomy rocks and dark forests, and longed for the brilliant brightness of the moon.

There was no thought of a life together, and so the princess returned to her homeland. The prince began to wander in the dark forests and mourn his lost love, when he met the king of the dwarves and told him his sorrow. The king promised to make the realm of the Dolomites shine brightly if the dwarf people were allowed to settle here.

The mutual promise was sealed with a handshake and fulfilled: In the coming night, the dwarf people caught one moonbeam after the other and covered the dark rocks of the Dolomites with it. The Moon Princess returned to the now Pale Mountains, which now shone as brightly as the moon, and happiness moved back into the Kingdom of the Dolomites...
