Passo dello Stelvio

The highest point in the municipality of Stelvio is also the highest mountain pass in Italy: the legendary Stelvio Pass

48 bends separate one village from the other: From Trafoi, the panoramic road leads uphill to the highest point in the municipal area of Stelvio, Passo dello Stelvio. There, enthroned in a wonderful position, are the Tibet Hut, whose tower was really built according to Tibetan models, as well as one of the highest located wellness centres of the Alps. However, there is only a lot of activity in summer: In winter, the section up to the Stelvio Pass remains closed and becomes a very special sledge run. Since 1935, the entire area has been protected as the Stelvio National Park.

Once you have managed the road up, a high alpine landscape with rough conditions awaits you: Even in summer, it is not uncommon that it snows at the 2,757 m high Passo dello Stelvio. Skiers and snowboarders can be found here from early summer until autumn. You find snow-sure pistes in the ski area, although in the summer of 2022 a glacial lake attracted attention, illustrating global warming and glacier melt, which does not even stop at the mythical Stelvio Pass (Stilfserjoch).

The shops and refreshment stops at the top of the pass are complemented by the Our Lady of the Snows Church, a bank, car parks and the lifts. Here you can also see cyclists who have conquered the 48 hairpin bends with pure muscle power as bike tour, motorcyclists who have the legendary Stelvio Pass on their list and then continue on to Bormio, and hikers who start from the pass on the Ortles High Route towards Stelvio or end their tour here on the Wormision Trail.
