San Giacomo borders on the south side of the city of Bolzano, but was able to preserve its village-like character.
From a hill above the valley basin of Bolzano, the church of S. Giacomo looks down on the homonymous village. A walk to this church provides an exclusive view on the city of Bolzano in the north and the valley in the south. In the last years, the border to Bolzano has more and more vanished, today San Giacomo blends into the city district of Oltrisarco, belonging to Bolzano.
Nevertheless the rather village-like character of the village that is by the way surrounded by fruit orchards, could have been preserved. The direct surroundings of the village is characterized by vineyards and fruit orchards, extending to the meadows of the Adige.
Today S. Giacomo has got some 3,000 inhabitants. The construction of a tunnel bypass in 2005 the village has been traffic-calmed. Further measures to upvalue the village are planned and realised in the oncoming years, such as the construction of a cycling path leading to the city of Bolzano.
