Montaccio

The small farm settlement of Montaccio is located high above the Val Passiria on the Merano High Route

Mountain farms spread across the slope above San Martino and are protected by the mighty Cima Matatz. Below the farms, the terrain drops steeply across mountain meadows, while above them, the slopes continue to rise. This landscape is ideal for hiking tours, which is probably why the famous and popular Merano High Route leads directly past Montaccio (Matatz).

Together with the settlement of Cresta, which also belongs to San Martino, Montaccio is primarily important as a panorama location and as a stopover and overnight location for hikers on the almost 100-kilometre-long Merano High Route. It is one of the most beautiful circular hiking trails in the Alpine region. The day stage from Montaccio to Vernurio takes around four hours.

Other excursions also allow you to explore the surroundings, including the shady Montaccio/Ulfas Waalweg path along the traditional irrigation channel, which leads through the spruce and larch forest on the hillside, or the mountain tour to the Cima Matatz. Ulfas or Cresta make excellent starting points for this four-hour tour. From the peak, the view opens up towards San Leonardo, San Martino, and the mighty Passo di Monte Giovo at the head of the Val Passiria.

Incidentally, the road up to Montaccio begins in the Lahne commercial zone near San Leonardo and then follows the Via Vallone-Montaccio, winding its way up the slope past groups of farms. The scattered farms of Montaccio are located just a 10 to 15-minute drive from the valley floor.
