San Martino di San Lorenzo

At the foot of a wooded hill near San Martino stands the historic Schwarzhorn Residence with its striking corner towers

On the hilly terrain between San Lorenzo di Sebato and the Val Badia lie the two idyllic hamlets of San Martino (St. Martin) and Palù, surrounded by meadows. Although many places in this area are now off the beaten track and seem almost forgotten by time, they have a long history.

San Martino, for example, was first mentioned in writing as early as the 12th century. The local church, dedicated to Saint Martin, also dates from this period and was fitted with a Gothic vault in the 16th century. Another historic building is the Schwarzhorn Residence, a square structure with two corner oriels and an arched doorway. It was once built by the Counts of Gorizia.

On the hiking trails around San Lorenzo di Sebato, you can discover the sprawling municipality and its many destinations. These include the Way of the Cross to the spiritual site of Santa Maria di Sares, the historically interesting Mansio Sebatum Museum in the main village of San Lorenzo, and Castelbadia with its former convent, which is set amidst flowering meadows in spring.

In winter, winter sports opportunities await you around San Martino, from moonlight tobogganing in Santo Stefano to skiing on the Val Pusteria's famous local mountain, the Plan de Corones.
