The Monte Elmo Cable Cars start at the edge of San Vito and take you up the mountain in the heart of the Sesto Dolomites
From San Candido, the road continues towards East Tyrol in Austria or turns right into the valley where Sesto is located. The main village of the municipality is San Vito Sesto (St. Veit in Sexten) on the Rio di Sesto stream. It is a well-known starting point for tours in the Three Peaks Nature Park in the Sesto Dolomites. You will also find everything you need for your holiday here.
The main square with its cafés, shops, the pharmacy and sports rental outlets are clustered around the Church of Saints Peter and Paul. The inhabitants once donated 5,059 guilders as well as larch and spruce wood for its construction. This church is worth a stop on a cultural tour of San Vito Sesto - at the cemetery entrance, you can admire the famous frescoes by Rudolf Stolz.
They depict the Dance of Death. The artist created many other works, and a dedicated museum has been established for him in the village centre. Another museum here is the Stabinger Nativity Scene Collection, one of four regional collections, which displays valuable oriental and Tyrolean nativity scenes. It is easy to be active here, as the impressive panorama draws everyone outdoors. The Sesto Circuit Trail is ideal for getting to know the village and gaining an insight into its history, culture and nature. The Val Campo di Dentro, where the Tre Scarperi Mountain Hut is perched high above, and the loop around the Three Peaks of Lavaredo are well-suited for hiking.
The Dolomitenarena climbing hall, the outdoor pool and the riding stables provide opportunities for other kinds of physical activity. In summer on the Monte Elmo, Olperl's Nature Park awaits younger visitors, who can meet a mysterious creature with glowing eyes, while the new Reinhold Messner Haus for adults tells of the wilderness and the mountains. The Helmjet starts right at the edge of the village. In winter, the Monte Elmo is part of the 3 Zinnen Dolomites Ski Resort.
