Hike along the Carnic High Route

Comfortable high altitude hike from the mountain station of the Monte Elmo Cable Car to the popular Sillian Mountain Hut at the Carnic Ridge

By the Monte Elmo Cable Car we reach the mountain station at 2,045 m asl. We are at the Carnic Ridge, a mountain chain which separates Italy and Austria. We follow the path no. 20 towards south-east, past the Rif. Gallo Cedrone mountain hut (Hahnspiel-Hütte) beneath the summit of the Monte Elmo (Helm) with its abandoned mountain hut. On the opposite side of the Val di Sesto valley, the peaks of the Sesto Dolomites rise up to the sky: Rocca dei Baranci, Punta dei Tre Scarperi, Croda Rossa di Sesto… also the Three Peaks of Lavaredo can be seen.

The slightly sloping path proceeds across the timberline through a high alpine heath with blooming herb meadows. After the junction with path no. 4, the wide drive way turns into a hiking path which proceeds straight at the border on the ridge. Again and again we pass boundary stones and the path changes from Italian to Austrian terrain and vice versa. After 90 minutes and at 2,440 m a.s.l. we finally reach the Sillian Mountain Hut, destination of our hiking tour today.

We enjoy a sunny break with meat and drink and a gorgeous view towards the Dolomites and until the Alpine divide. Later we take the same way back and by cable car we turn back into the valley.
