Mountain tour from Sesto to the Rifugio Locatelli

We hike up to Tre Cime - Locatelli Mountain Hut for a memorable view of the imposing towers of the Dolomites

The Three Peaks of Lavaredo create a striking image that travels around the world. Our mountain hut tour begins in the Val Fiscalina, which is accessible from Sesto, at the bus stop and hikers' car park near the Hotel Dolomitenhof. We follow the path into the valley to the Fondovalle Hut at an altitude of 1,548 metres, located at the entrance to the Three Peaks Nature Park.

From there, we take trail no. 102 through the Val Sassovecchio - soon it becomes a steep trail, taking us steadily higher towards the Antonio Locatelli - Sepp Innerkofler Hut, dedicated to Sepp Innerkofler, an Austrian mountaineer and soldier who became very famous as a mountain guide in the Dolomites in the late 19th century, and to Antonio Locatelli, an Italian aviator, politician and military officer. On the left, the Cima Una and the Croda Fiscalina di Mezzo tower above us.

To our right and ahead, we can see the Torre di Toblin and Mt. Sasso di Sesto. At the tree line, the vegetation becomes sparser, but the colours of the alpine flowers appear even more vibrant in contrast. The path climbs continuously through the impressive mountain landscape.

At 2,300 metres above sea level, we have been walking for almost three hours. We reach a plateau where the sky reflects in two mountain lakes. These are the Laghi dei Piani (Bödenseen), nestled in the high meadows beneath the massive Monte Paterno. One final small incline lies ahead, and we can spot the roof of the Locatelli Hut (Drei Zinnen Hütte) at an altitude of 2,405 metres.

Behind it, the peaks stand proudly: The Cima Grande, Cima Piccola, and Cima Ovest together form the famous massif, which just falls short of the 3,000-metre mark. When we reach the hut, a superb panorama unfolds before us. The hut itself serves hot meals daily and provides overnight accommodation. The descent towards Sesto follows the same route and takes about two hours.
