Hike to the Malga Weitenberg hut

The roaring Weitenberg stream lines the hiking trail to the Weitenberg Mountain Hut in Fundres

The Weitenberg Hut sits in the heart of the Fundres Mountains and opens during the summer. We drive through Fundres, noting its charming farms, towards the hamlet of Dun. We continue on foot from the car park, which is also the starting point for hikes to the Ponte di Ghiaccio Hut or the Montestretto Hut. We follow a paved road around a right-hand bend.

Near the Liabm holiday home, we take a sharp left turn onto hiking trail no. 6. The path is wide and leads us into the forest. On our left, we see the deep gorge with the roaring Weitenberg stream, which will follow our route from now on. The trail levels out, allowing us to resume our conversation as the green valley stretches out before us.

Walking along the left bank of the stream, we gradually leave the rushing water behind and pass the turn-off for the Malga di Montestretto, or Engbergalm, on our right. The first blooming alpine roses appear. We soon reach the Weitenberg Hut: Located at an altitude of 1,954 metres, it provides a small menu of hot and cold dishes. The hut also sells its own dairy products.

After a short break, we start our descent. At a left-hand bend, we turn onto a narrow path signed for Fundres. This shortcut leads us to the bridge in the lower section of the hike. Following the forest track, we arrive back at our starting point. The hut also serves as a base for many mountain bikers completing a pass crossing, for example the Passo di Fundres.
