The Monte Elmo skiing and hiking area high above Versciaco invites you to outdoor adventures in the mountains of the Val Pusteria
One of the mountains in the Upper Val Pusteria that belong to the famous 3 Zinnen Dolomites Ski Resort is located right at the gates of Versciaco (Vierschach): Mount Elmo. There, where high up in summer a mysterious creature with big shining eyes has its very own realm of adventure, namely the Olperl in Olperl's Adventure Park, snow-sure ski slopes stretch out in winter. In this ski network, they reach as far as the Val Comelico valley in Belluno, and in the next few years they are also to be connected across the border to those on Mount Thurntal in East Tyrol in Austria.
The small village of Versciaco, a district of the market town of San Candido, consists of Versciaco di Sopra and Versciaco di Sotto, so to say of Upper and Lower Versciaco. A little above the centre, on a church hill that is one of the most beautiful in the country, thrones the idyllic Parish Church of St. Magdalene. It is a true showpiece of Tyrolean Gothic and can be visited. The rococo sculptor Veit Königer, who is responsible for the creation of timelessly beautiful works of art such as the altar in the Graz Cathedral and some sculptures in Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna, also comes from here.
In Versciaco you can explore the mountains on foot and the valley basin of the Val Pusteria by bike: The "Pusterbike" cycle path takes you on a journey that - if you want to do it in stages - leads through the entire South Tyrol. The section in the Val Pusteria runs between San Candido and Fortezza, where it then continues towards the Brennero or Bolzano. Moreover, Versciaco is well connected to the local public transport network: Buses take you to the surrounding villages and to excursion destinations, and the easternmost railway station in South Tyrol can be found here.
