Waldberg

Around the Martello Mountain Farmers Trail, there’s plenty to discover in the Stelvio National Park

Waldberg is situated in the Upper Val Martello, on the same side of the valley as Montesole. It is one of the six hamlets of the municipality of Martello. Beyond Waldberg, the valley culminates in a distinctive head of the valley featuring Lake Gioveretto and the surrounding alpine pastures. Waldberg itself also boasts a popular hiking destination: the Stallwies inn, located at an altitude of 2,000 metres in the Stelvio National Park, a well-known spot for a hearty meal after a hike.

A special feature in Waldberg is its themed trail, which takes about three hours to lead you through the natural and cultural landscape on the slope. You can also walk it on snowshoes in winter. The individual stations along the Martello Mountain Farmers Trail tell you how people live here and how the farmers carry out their work. They are called "Waldberg & Dangers", "Waldberg & Lime Kiln" - at this station, you'll learn more about an abandoned lime kiln where quicklime, an important building material, was once extracted from limestone - and "Waldberg & Stone Pine".

"Waldberg & Park" is dedicated to the Stelvio National Park and its inhabitants. Among them is the bearded vulture, which was reintroduced in the Sluder Valley in Martello. For decades, it was considered extinct in the Alps, but now it once again circles the skies above the Val Martello.

The bearded vulture is an inhabitant of the high mountains, just like the ibex. Chamois and marmots, on the other hand, you can also observe at lower altitudes - or hear them when the marmots warn each other with whistles. In winter, Waldberg is located above Santa Maria alla Fonderia. One of South Tyrol's centres for biathlon and cross-country skiing is located there.
