The name Castelpietra (Sprechenstein) is inextricably linked with the castle of the same name: The small hamlet in the municipality of Campo di Trens is primarily known for its castle complex. It is perched between Campo di Trens and the Vipiteno Swamp, opposite Tasso Castle. Pietra Castle is not open to the public, but it is widely visible with its round tower and is known for its legend of the knight with the arrow in his heart. The early-Gothic Erasmus Chapel inside and the Princes' Rooms, which were intended for nobles passing through, are still well preserved today.
With the farm inn right next to the castle, Castelpietra is a popular stop on the hike from the pilgrimage site of Maria Trens to Tasso Castle on the other side of the valley. Following the farm-to-table concept, the ingredients for the dishes come either from local farmers or from the inn's own farm. It also includes a cheese dairy. A biotope also bears the name Castelpietra, and that almost describes the size of the place: A few farms are located near the castle and in the valley below.
Castelpietra is known for its convenient location in this nothern part of South Tyrol: You can reach the town of Vipiteno in just a few minutes by bus and still be in the countryside. The hamlet is located directly on the Upper Valle Isarco Cycle Path, so you can get around without a car.
In winter, the three ski resorts of the Upper Valle Isarco are not far: Racines-Giovo, Monte Cavallo with its valley station on the outskirts of Vipiteno, and Ladurns. Their slopes can be accessed with a single ski pass and are also great places for tobogganing adventures.
