The sunny village of San Pietro is considered the main village of the valley and boasts the “dome in the valley”.
San Pietro, the main village of Funes, has got 630 inhabitants and is located in the heart of the valley at 1,130 m. The sunny centre of the village surrounds the church of the village, that is consecrated to the apostles Petrus and Paulus. Due to the mighty 65 m high bulbous church steeple, this sacred building is also called the “dome in the valley”.
The ceiling paintings of the late Baroque period are pieces of art by the Tyrolean artist Joseph Schöpf. In San Pietro, there are also several common facilities such as the cultural centre, school and sports centre with ice skating ground and library.
Also Pizzago, a series of farmsteads on the opposite side of the valley, makes part of San Pietro. Only a stone’s throw away, there is the sunny village of San Valentino, which offers a lovely church with a Romanesque stone pyramid spire.
San Pietro is by the way ideal for low mountain range walks, as there are several nice trails such as the panorama trail. From the centre you can also reach a waterfall, just follow the signpost 31. A small road takes to the Passo delle Erbe above San Pietro, proceeding to Val Badia. Highly recommendable to passionate motor-bikers, but also to those who love mountain biking.
