The Natural History Museum of South Tyrol is hosting an interactive conference on earthquake research and seismic risk prevention. While earthquakes remain impossible to predict, science has developed tools to identify high-risk areas and act before the next event strikes.

Italy has many seismically hazardous regions — from the Apennine areas, which face not only structural damage but also isolation and depopulation, to densely inhabited zones like the Campi Flegrei, where a major event could prove catastrophic. The conference tackles key questions: what is the real cost of earthquakes? How worthwhile is prevention? And what knowledge is needed to make it effective?

The speaker is Gemma Musacchio, a geoscientist with a PhD and researcher at the Istituto Nazionale di Geologia e Vulcanologia. She has worked with research institutions in Germany, Canada, and the United States, and holds a master's degree in science journalism and science communication. The event will actively engage the audience through simulations and interactive sessions.
