To err is human, and scientists are certainly no different. What is different is the way they communicate and discuss the results of their research with each other, which is almost as important a part of scientific work as the actual research itself. Through legitimate mistakes, glaring oversights, a few nasty mistakes (and at least one historical upset) we learn how the 'scientific literature' system works.
Stefano Bagnasco, a physicist, is a manager at the National Institute of Nuclear Physics in Turin. He works on computational systems for analysing data from particle physics and gravitational wave experiments. He is a CICAP member and populariser.
Recognised as a refresher course in PPA
