MTB tour from Covelano to the marble quarry

This MTB tour takes us from the banks of the Adige River in Covelano up to the Covelano Mountain Hut and the marble quarry above

The starting point of this mountain bike tour is Covelano on the banks of the Adige river, not far from Silandro village, the main village of the Val Venosta valley. Through the Via Schmiding road the route leads to the church, immediately steeply uphill. After a few minutes we are already on the mountain road to Monte Tramontana. At the first junction we keep right (towards Monte Tramontana di Dentro), then left towards Wiebenhof and right again towards Tafratz-Hof. There we take the forest road and follow the signpost "Göflaner Alm" (Malga di Covelano).

About 12 turns later we reach the Covelano Alpine Pasture, which also offers a snack station. After the well-deserved stop for a bite to eat, the last section of the hiking trail towards the marble quarry follows. The almost 200 metres of altitude difference and 800 metres of distance are alternately used as a driving and pushing route. At the Covelano Marble quarry, the cut out blocks of the shining white stone are placed. It is considered one of the purest and hardest marble stones and is exported worldwide. Old buildings like the Wantlhütte or the power house bear witness to the history of marble quarrying. The quarries are located at the foot of Mt. Hörnele and Croda Jenna in the Lasa Mountains, which reach a height of almost 3,000 m a.s.l.

For the descent down into the valley we choose another route and cycle down the serpentines of the road as far as below the Covelano Mountain Hut, where we take path no. 10, which leads us - later a little wider - to the farms of Monte Tramontana di Dentro. From there, the last section back to Covelano is done on asphalt.
