The second part of the Chestnut Trail leads up the Renon for around 12 kilometres - from Roncolo Castle to Auna di Sotto

At the start of our morning hike at Roncolo Castle in Bolzano, the "Painted Castle" - known throughout Europe - still lies in shadow at the entrance to the Val Sarentino. However, walking uphill warms you up: The route leads through the deciduous forest, past autumnal yellow vineyards, and time and again we enjoy the wonderful views of the town of Bolzano.
After 90 minutes, the path becomes flatter and joins an asphalt road, which leads us to the Ebnicher farm inn. The farm is situated at an altitude of around 850 metres above sea level, almost directly beneath the cabins of the Renon Cable Car gliding past overhead. A gentle up and down through the Rio Rivellone valley follows, offering views of some of the Renon Earth Pyramids.
Then we reach the hamlet of Signato. Signato is a hotspot for Toerggelen, just like the rustic Partschunerhof about 20 minutes away, where we take a break. From here, it is around another 45 minutes to Auna di Sotto: A short, stony section with steps challenges us, before things become more leisurely by the little Church of St. Sebastian. And then the stage destination is already reached: From Auna di Sotto (Unterinn), there is a bus connection back to Bolzano.
