The Italian name, Piccolino, fits perfectly: Meaning "very small", Piccolino is a hamlet in the Val Badia and part of the municipality of San Martino in Badia. Several historic buildings adorn the village, including the "Ćiasa dl Maier" house, which was built around 1650 and is still well preserved, and the small Church of St. Anthony. In Ladin, it is known as "dlijia de Sant Antone".
Above the village stands an even older structure from the 14th century, Ćiastel Freieck. However, Piccolino (Pikolein) has kept up with the times: Its historic buildings provide a pleasant backdrop for modern facilities such as cafés, restaurants, a pharmacy, and a community services centre.
The nearby mountain villages of Antermoia and Longiarù, as well as the Passo delle Erbe mountain pass, create numerous possibilities for an active holiday in the mountains. In winter, the only way is up: Two ski resorts are situated on the peaks above the Val Badia. One of them, the Plan de Corones, is directly accessible from Piccolino via the Piculin Cable Car.
With around 120 kilometres of slopes for all ability levels, the Plan de Corones is South Tyrol's largest and perhaps best-known ski resort. A little further into the valley lies the Alta Badia Skiing Area, whose slopes are connected to the Plan de Corones via the Dolomiti Superski circuit.
