Agumes

The theme trail in Agumes with Ferdinand the forest mouse is an ideal family hike in the protected area at the Stelvio Pass

Agumes is the name of the small village that is part of the National Park municipality of Prato allo Stelvio. It is located on the local mountain called Montoni to the north of Prato. Here stands the charming St. George Chapel with the miraculous Lord God of Agumes, a pilgrimage destination. This refers to the life-size crucifix from the 14th century that symbolises St. George. Even older is the Church of St. John on the other side of the village of Prato, built at the end of the 13th century. In this oldest church of the municipality, part of the "Alpine Road of Romanesque Art - Stairway to Heaven" between South Tyrol and Grisons, both St. Johns are venerated as patron saints.

But back to Agumes (Agums): In the village centre is the cemetery with car park, starting point of the family hike on the Gumperle Animal Path (Waldtierpfad Gumperle). The trail takes you past the St. Georg tavern, a popular local inn, to the little church above it. It is an ideal place for a break with a magnificent view on the valley basin and the surrounding orchards. Now Ferdinand the forest mouse shows up to accompany the little children on the circular walk. He tells them how bird calls sound, what deer antlers look like and what a woodpecker tunnel is.

Other hikes lead from Agumes to the large ruin of Montechiaro Castle and to the Montechiaro Mountain Hut near the Montechiaro farmsteads. It can also be reached by mountain bike on well-maintained farm tracks and forest roads. All three districts of the municipality of Prato allo Stelvio - Prato, Montechiaro and Agumes - are united in the tour along the Frauwaal, one of the famous irrigation channel paths, which is also suitable as a family hike due to the short distance.
