Rising on a little hill in the village, the S. Caterina Chapel is considered the symbol of the municipality of Avelengo. The Romanesque church with Gothic apsis dates back to the 13th century and boasts beautiful and well-preserved frescoes inside.
Until 1923 the idyllic village of S. Caterina was hard to reach. After the construction of the funicular from Merano/Maia Alta to S. Caterina it became much easier, but after the construction of a road the service was abandoned.
In this place you can really feel the calm and tranquillity. The intact natural landscape and the view on the mountains in the surroundings are ideal conditions for relaxing walks. Particularly recommendable is a walk to the Sulfner Pond, which boasts a large number of water lilies in summertime.
