Particular attention is dedicated to the village of S. Caterina and its Romanesque church.
Rising on a little hill in the village, the S. Caterina chapel is considered the symbol of the municipality of Avelengo. The Romanesque church with Gothic apsis dates back to the 13th century and boasts beautiful and well-preserved frescoes.
Until 1923 the idyllic village af S. Caterina was hardly reachable. After the construction of the funicular from Merano/Maia Alta to S. Caterina it became much easier, but in the course of time the service was abandoned.
In this place you can really feel calm and tranquility. The intact natural landscape and the view on the mountains in the surroundings are ideal preconditions for recreative walks. Particularly recommendable is a walk to the Sulfner pond, which boasts a large number of water lilies in summertime.
