Our two-hour walk through the varied mountain landscape above the Merano basin starts in Avelengo village (Hafling Dorf). Setting off from the church hill, we first descend into the Rio Sinigo valley. Here, the Bürgele Trail was renovated and expanded into the Haflinger Horse Adventure Trail. Several stations now explain the history of the village and the Haflinger horses.
At the edge of the mixed forest, we walk across the bridge and head slightly uphill on the other side of the valley to the Nusser car park. We briefly follow the road uphill towards Avelengo di Sopra and then turn off towards the Hotel Viktoria. The forest begins right behind the building, with the Sulfner Nature Trail running through it. We now head up to this tranquil spot.
It is a biotope featuring water lilies and a circular path in the middle of the forest. At an altitude of 1,339 metres, we fully take in the natural surroundings. We then make a short descent down to Santa Caterina di Avelengo and one of South Tyrol's most photographed sights.
Alongside the Haflinger horses, the picture-perfect St. Catherine Church is the second landmark of the municipality of Avelengo. Behind it, the peaks of the Texel Group stand tall. It will not be long before they are dusted with snow! Later, we return to Avelengo village along the same path.
