An extended but easy mountain hut tour near Avelengo, leading to the Leadner, Verano and Wurzer Huts
Image gallery: Hike of the three pastures of Avelengo
For this beautiful day in May, we choose the plateau between Avelengo and Verano as our destination - we have planned a fourteen-kilometre walk through the woods and meadows south of Avelengo. We start slightly above the village, where path no. 16 branches off through green meadows towards the Leadner Hut. The broad path crosses the forest, then descends gently.
It leads straight to the hut which stands amid idyllic mountain pastures and larch meadows on the sunny Monzoccolo. After a short rest, we continue along the forest road, which runs parallel to path no. 11, up to the Verano Hut, or Vöraner Alm. The route now heads slightly upwards.
So we climb from 1,500 to 1,900 metres above sea level - anyone wishing to save some time can take the shortcut through the forest (path no. 11A). We have now reached the highest point of the circular walk: the sunny meadows of the Verano Hut, known for its roast mutton and apple strudel. The return journey to Avelengo is slightly shorter - we follow path no. 2 through the forest.
In a clearing, we reach the third hut, the Wurzer Hut. With its playground, children's portions and farm animals, it is a well-known family destination. Following path no. 2 (or the almost parallel forest track no. 2A), we finally return to the centre of Avelengo. In winter, this circular walk can be done as a snowshoe hike or as a shorter winter walk to the Leadner Mountain Hut.
