San Giorgio

From San Giorgio, a hamlet - not a component locality - of Scena, you can enjoy a great view on the spa town of Merano.

Surrounded by fruit orchards, meadows and forests, there is an impressive sacred building, high above the roofs of Merano. We are now in the centre of a component locality of Scena, that is to say San Giorgio, and are talking about the round church in its centre. Constructed in the 12th and 13th century, it was originally built as castle chapel of the ancient castle of Scena, also called San Giorgio castle. In its interior you can enjoy well-preserved frescoes of the 14th century, including the illustration of the martyry of S. Giorgio.

The village of San Giorgio is located at 716 m asl and offers a charming view on the city of Merano, as well as the Val d’Adige and the surrounding world of mountains. To those would like to make a getaway to Scena we recommend a walk on the Roggia di Lagundo (Waalweg) trail, taking past San Giorgio and leading to Scena.
