Town of Brunico

Brunico, a welcoming spot on the Rienza River with its castle and art museum, is the main town of the Val Pusteria

Brunico stretches from the castle hill on the road to Riscone - called Schlossberg - to the entrance of the Valli di Tures and Aurina valleys near San Giorgio on the other side. Between them, the charming old town with its colourful medieval houses forms the lively centre of Brunico. It runs from the paved Via Ragen di Sopra to the Ursuline Church and the Tschurtschenthaler Park.

The Rienza River flows through Brunico and continues its course through the Val Pusteria, passing the St. Catherine Church. A coffee in front of medieval facades, a cinema night at the Odeon Cinecenter, a concert in the newly designed Town Hall Square, an ice cream sundae on the shaded Via Bastioni, or a visit to one of the religious buildings like the St. Catherine Church - Brunico is as diverse as its visitors. In the town area, there are several churches and museums, including the town museum - now the Eck Museum of Art - and the MMM Ripa in Brunico Castle.

The MMM Ripa is one of the six Messner Mountain Museums. It is located in the historic castle, which dates back to the founding of "Bruneggn" by Bishop Bruno in the 13th century, providing a fitting setting. At midday, a loud sound sometimes breaks through the hustle and bustle: The Concordia 2000, the peace bell on the summit of Mt. Plan de Corones, is ringing.

You can also be active in and around Brunico. On the outskirts are the Brunico outdoor pool and the Heliks Climbing Centre, with 220 sport climbing routes and 120 bouldering tracks, as well as the modern ice rink of the Brunico ARENA in winter. The surroundings, with its cycling and hiking trails, are ideal for tours. In the Reiperting sports zone in Riscone, you can also play tennis and golf.

Mobility: Due to the construction of the Riggertal loop and safety-related works, sections of the Val Pusteria Railway will be closed until January 2026. A rail replacement bus service will be in operation. The three… read more
