Floronzo

Where the Rio Gadera flows into the Rienza River and the Val Pusteria begins, the Colle di Floronzo hill rises up

The tranquil hamlet of Floronzo (Pflaurenz) is the lowest-lying district of San Lorenzo di Sebato. In recent years, however, the valley basin between the Val Pusteria and Val Badia has become known for another reason: The new, wider entrance to the Val Badia, designed to better manage traffic and avoid delays, was built, in part, through a tunnel under the Colle di Floronzo, a hill also known as Pflaurenzer Köpfl. The hill is a small local recreation area and is ideal for leisurely walks.

At the entrance to the village stands the Rosary Chapel, where the "Forest Christmas" used to be celebrated. In the village itself, besides a bus stop and a few shops, there is also a candlemaker and the Leitner Mill, a family business now in its fourth generation. It is still powered by water: Here, a wide selection of flour, seeds, and spices are freshly ground for you with their stone mill.

Near Floronzo, the Colle di Floronzo rises up, a hill just under the 1,000-metre mark, covered by the Klosterwald (literally: monastery forest). The Klosterwald Chapel there was built in memory of those who fell in the Tyrolean freedom fights of 1809 and 1813. It is suspected, however, that the deceased were buried here as early as the Middle Ages during the time of the plague.

The Pilgrimage Church of Our Lady of Loreto in Santa Maria di Sares and the main village of San Lorenzo are also worth a visit. Thanks to the well-developed public transport network, both destinations are easy to reach. You can also easily cover the short distance of about one kilometre to San Lorenzo on foot or via the Pusterbike Cycle Path which then continues to Brunico.
