Above Martello’s main village, hiking destinations like Lake Covelano and the impressive Punta di Lasa await you
Meiern, or Martello village, is the name of the main village of the Martello municipality, situated on the sunny western slope of the valley. The road leads you up here from Ganda di Martello on the valley floor. Around the Parish Church of St. Walburga, the alpine pastures stretch out and the houses of the village centre stand at an altitude of 1,300 metres. Among them, you will find several accommodation providers, the community centre, the primary school, and the volunteer fire brigade. The houses above this area are known as Oberdorf.
Due to its sunny location, this village with its surrounding farmsteads is thought to be the oldest settlement in Martello. Today, various relaxing hiking trails on the sunny slope, as well as some more challenging mountain tours, start in Meiern. One of these begins at the church and then leads you uphill to the Haslerböden area and the Steinwand Farm. Afterwards, the route continues over secured rock steps to the Morterer Leger, offering views of the Orecchia di Lepre glacier.
Another tour targets the 2,320-metre-high Forcella di Covelano, with Lake Covelano situated above it. A demanding tour for resilient alpinists is to the most imposing peak that rises above Meiern: the mighty Punta di Lasa. The area within the Stelvio National Park makes hut-to-hut hikes a special experience, even in winter. Then you can sledge back down the path from the Livi Hut.
In Ganda di Martello, you will also find one of the toboggan runs in the Val Venosta: the Hölderle natural toboggan run. Added to this are the cross-country ski tracks of the Martello Nordic Ski and Biathlon Centre, which are snow-sure from November to March. Professionals offer individual and group lessons at the cross-country ski school.
