When you drive into the Valle di Selva dei Molini, you first see the farms of Selva di Fuori (Outer Selva), a hamlet of Selva dei Molini. Afterwards, you reach the main village, which also includes Selva di Dentro (Inner Selva) with its mills and sawmills. The houses stretch along the shores of Lake Selva dei Molini, also known as Lake Meggima, at the foot of the mighty Zillertal Alps.
It is one of two reservoirs in the Valle di Selva dei Molini and a popular destination for fly fishers. You can walk around it on a pleasant lakeside path: This trail, named "Power of Water", is the first of several themed trails that introduce you to this vital element. Another one, "Water and Wheels", leads you to the mills of Selva di Dentro. The landscape here is characterised by rushing streams and the rugged peaks of the Zillertal Alps, as well as old farmhouses and the aforementioned mills.
These are all historical testaments to the long history of the Valle di Selva dei Molini, as the place name itself means "mills in a wooded area". It was first mentioned well over a thousand years ago. Longer hiking trails, such as the Selva dei Molini Valley Trail and the Selva dei Molini Alpine Pasture Trail, also run through the Valle di Selva dei Molini and up to traditional wooden huts. These mountain huts are open in summer and invite you to stop for refreshments, offering South Tyrolean Speck and Kaminwurzen. One of these huts is the Obermair Hut, near Lake Venga.
At these high altitudes, snow often falls as early as autumn, transforming the paths into charming winter hiking trails. For cross-country skiers, there is a seven-kilometre cross-country ski track from Selva dei Molini to Lappago. The Speikboden Skiing Area is located outside the valley.
