San Pietro Aurina

Discover the Valle Aurina “Sunnsat” Sun Trail and the surrounding mountains from San Pietro Aurina

San Pietro is one of the last villages in the vast Aurina Valley, characterised by old farmhouses and green alpine pastures. From here, it is only a few kilometres to the head of the valley in Casere, where the road ends at the information point for the Vedrette di Ries-Aurina Nature Park.

The farmhouses on the slopes look down on the parish church, which is dedicated to the apostles Peter and Paul. One of these farms is the Duregghof, which was probably the seat of the nobles of Eurn (Ahrn), who gave the valley its German name: Ahrntal. San Pietro is a starting and finishing point for the Valle Aurina Sun Paths, which run along the "Sunnsat" (sunny side) of the valley.

These ancient routes were once used for trade and smuggling with the neighbouring valleys - all on foot with rucksacks, of course. Today, the paths are part of a network of trails that guide you through the landscape and villages on the sunny side of the Zillertal Alps. The route leads past refreshment stops and alpine huts, through flowering rhododendrons in June, and through colourful deciduous forests in October, when the first snowflakes sometimes begin to fall.

From the church hill of San Pietro Aurina (St. Peter im Ahrntal), called Peterer Kofl, another ancient path leads over the Passo del Cane mountain pass above Predoi, further into the valley, and into the Austrian Zillertal. In the village itself, you can take horse-drawn carriage and sleigh rides. In winter, you can also enjoy the nearby Klausberg Ski Arena with three toboggan runs.
