Hike to the Laghetto di San Costantino pond

Autumn excursion from the Valle Isarco up to Fié allo Sciliar, away from the busy hiking trails

The early days of October provide the perfect time for a hike on the slopes of the Valle Isarco because the summer heat has already passed - a great opportunity to explore one of the lesser-known areas of South Tyrol. Starting from Campodazzo in the Valle Isarco, we cross the bridge over the river just behind the Valle Isarco Cycle Path between Bolzano and Bressanone.

We then follow a small tarmac road under the Brennero Motorway. Following marker number 2 we climb up to the farms of Novale di Fié. The hamlet is called Völser Ried in German. We soon leave the noise of the motorway behind and reach a terraced landscape characterised by viticulture.

Shortcuts along forest paths take us further and further up. We can see the meadows and woods of Renon on the opposite side of the valley. From Novale di Fié we follow the path towards San Costantino and the San Costantino Pond (no. 12). The path conditions change constantly. We first walk along the tarmac road before taking an old and slightly overgrown cobbled street, and finally we follow a forest trail. This route leads us to the San Costantino Pond.

Unlike the much-visited Fié Pond, it is a quiet place. This peacefulness is exactly what makes it so appealing. To finish the walk we stroll to the St. Constantine Church - known locally as "Kristanzen" - and then take the footpath to Fié allo Sciliar. The return journey to Campodazzo goes either via the Novale di Fié road or by bus with a change in Prato all'Isarco.
