Experience Christmas atmosphere and traditions at the “Kastelruther Bergweihnacht” below the Sciliar

During Advent, from late November to late December, the village centre of Castelrotto is filled with a quiet and contemplative atmosphere. The eight stalls at the small Castelrotto Mountain Christmas market on the historic village square sell handmade decorations and original gift ideas.
It is open on weekends and public holidays throughout Advent. You can easily combine a visit to the market with a stop at the Castelrotto Museum of Traditional Costumes, which is also on the village square, or with a few laps around the ice rink right next to the Christmas Market.
The four main locations:
- Village square: the heart of the market with its wooden huts and the St. Nicholas parade
- Art Gallery Lächler: "Art under the Sciliar" exhibition
- Parish church: Advent concerts and the traditional "Turmblasen" on Christmas Eve
- Telfen tennis hall: the venue for the Christmas concert by the "Kastelruther Spatzen"
Delicacies at the market:
There is plenty to eat and drink: Warming beverages like mulled wine and hot apple punch, as well as sweet treats like Christstollen and South Tyrolean Zelten await you. Or how about some homemade Castelrotto Krapfen (doughnuts), which are sometimes freshly prepared?
The delicious filling usually consists of dried pears, plum jam and cinnamon, while the light pastry is made from cream, milk, butter, eggs and flour. Another version is filled with chestnut purée.
The supporting programme:
Of course, St. Nicholas and Krampus also make an appearance. Brass bands and Christmas carollers provide the musical backdrop, and on some evenings, there is also music from a DJ.
A living nativity scene, a magic show with Tino, and the autograph session with the "Kastelruther Spatzen" are also very popular events. On the last Sunday of the year, the Castelrotto Mountain Christmas market concludes with a closing party featuring the band Karussell.
Christmas concert by the "Kastelruther Spatzen":
Traditionally, the Castelrotto Mountain Christmas would not be complete without a concert from the village's most famous residents. On Friday, December 19, 2025, the "Kastelruther Spatzen" will host their atmospheric Christmas concert in the tennis hall in Telfen, near Castelrotto.
Getting to the Castelrotto Mountain Christmas:
The number 170 bus connects the provincial capital, Bolzano, directly with Castelrotto, with a journey time of about 45 minutes. With the SouthTyrol Guest Pass, you can use public transport throughout South Tyrol for free. There are also several public car parks available in Castelrotto.
Additionally, there are two multi-storey car parks: One is directly at the bus station, and the other is at the entrance to Castelrotto (if you are arriving from Siusi allo Sciliar).
