Cycling in the Dolomite world: In September, the Eroica Dolomiti takes participants to the most beautiful places
Eroica is a cycling movement that wants to show - as the motto says - "the magic of exhaustion and the pleasure of venture" with events for classic and modern bikes all over the world. Eroica cycling events are held on every continent, including California, South Africa, Germany, Switzerland and Spain. And so it is in Italy: One of them has been held every year since 2017 at the beginning of September in the stunning Dolomites in the Upper Val Pusteria. There are three categories.
The Long Dolomite Route (110 km and 2,740 m of altitude difference) is the original one and leads from San Candido to wonderful places such as the Prato Piazza, the Three Peaks Nature Park and on Mt. Cornetto di Confine, past the villages of Dobbiaco and Cortina d'Ampezzo.
The Medium Dolomite Route (91 km and 1,870 m of altitude difference) skips Mt. Cornetto di Confine, a 2,545-metre high peak on the border to Austria which is known as Markinkele in German, and takes two hours less, the Short Dolomite Route (73 km and 1,258 m of altitude difference) does also without Dobbiaco and the Prato Piazza. Heroic distances!
