San Cassiano

The holiday resort of San Cassiano in the Alta Badia, San Ciascian in Ladin, tells of cave bears and haute cuisine

San Cassiano (St. Kassian) is located about 7 km from the centre of Badia, towards the Valparola Pass and the Kaiserjäger Trails of the WWI. Surrounded by an incomparable mountain world, you will find yourself in the ideal holiday destination for hikers and mountaineers who want to conquer the walls of Mt. Conturines, Mt. La Varella, Mt. Settsass and Mt. Lagazuoi, and for skiers and cross-country skiers in winter, who have the Armentarola Cross-Country Centre at their disposal.

The village is composed of scattered houses and the central pedestrian zone, between which the gourmet temple St. Hubertus can be found: It has been awarded the highest marks of the famous restaurant guides Gault Millau and Michelin. It is currently being completely renovated. A few houses further on, the Museum Ladin Ursus ladinicus invites you to get to know the world of the cave bear. Ursus ladinicus lived in the interglacial period high up in the mountains, below the Conturines Peak at 2,800 m a.s.l. His bones were found there a few years ago.

Besides feasting, San Cassiano means above all active holidays. As small as the village is, there is a wide range of sports facilities, including the extensive network of trails and the Alta Badia MTB trails on the Piz Sorega Plateau, as well as the Sass Dlacia Climbing Garden. In winter, when the Alta Badia Skiing Area opens its doors, the nine trails of the Armentarola Cross-Country Centre and the Trú Liösa Foram sledge run show you San Cassiano and Alta Badia from a different perspective. The sledge run starts on Piz Sorega and ends directly at the village.
