Do you know the Parliament of Marmots? This hike near San Cassiano leads to the settings of the Dolomite legends

A 16-kilometre hike from Pederù to San Cassiano shows you one of South Tyrol's most beautiful landscapes. We decide to tackle it on this warm July day. The shuttle bus takes us from San Vigilio di Marebbe into the Val di Tamers to the Pederù Hut. And here, our hiking tour into another world begins. The path runs along a funnel-shaped scree slope of Dolomite rock up to a high valley.
It is characterised by mountain pines. The trail now continues more gently to the meadows of the Malga Fanes Piccola. A fairytale landscape with a meandering stream in the raised bog and surrounded by pale Dolomite rocks accompanies us further to the Lavarella Mountain Hut. A gigantic, naturally formed amphitheatre with steps consisting of Dolomite layers surrounds us.
It is the Parliament of Marmots in the Kingdom of Fanes that makes this already wonderful landscape even more unique. Soon we climb past Lé Vert and the Fanes Hut towards the Passo di Limo and can finally admire the full extent of this natural spectacle.
Naturally, the marmots' whistles are ever-present. The path leads upwards again to the Passo di Limo at 2,170 metres above sea level. Lake Limo is also located here, standing out with its yellow-green colour directly below the Col Bechei. And the first downhill section follows shortly after, leading down to Malga Fanes Grande. As it is midday, we treat ourselves to a break in the hut.
The landscape at the watershed to the Piave is no less fantastic than what the morning provided. Path No. 11 then takes us to Sciaré, featuring a short but rugged descent followed by longer, almost flat stretches. In Sciaré (Saré) in San Cassiano, we then board the regular bus, which takes us back to Marebbe via a connection in La Villa.
