A memorable mountain hike in the Alta Badia and Cortina d’Ampezzo Dolomites to the Lagazuoi Hut and to Lake Lagazuoi

Our tour to the Lagazuoi Hut begins at the car park near Saré, south of San Cassiano. In the shadow of the mountain peaks, we follow the "Nicholas of Flüe" meditation trail, which leads first to the Sass Dlacià Chapel and then on to the Capanna Alpina. Here we follow the signpost to the Rifugio Scotoni mountain hut. The broad path soon becomes steep and rugged as we ascend.
Imposing Dolomite peaks surround the valley, with names such as Conturines, Lagazuoi, Croda del Becco and the Fanes peaks. After 45 minutes, we reach the Scotoni Hut, which sits on a small plateau. From here, the path begins its ascent through a gorge to Lake Lagazuoi. This is a small, clear mountain lake where the striking peaks of the Fanes Group reflect in the water. This is arguably the finest and most memorable of the many sights we encounter today.
After a short break, we continue our climb. Path no. 20, which overlaps with the Dolomites High Route, runs parallel to the rugged rock faces of the Fanes peaks and the Grande Lagazuoi. We continue upwards for quite some time. The vegetation becomes sparser, and from an altitude of 2,500 metres, the barren lunar landscape, typical of the Dolomites, takes over completely.
The final 200 metres of the ascent from the Lagazuoi saddle wind in zigzags up the steep slope to the cable car station. Along the way, we repeatedly spot the remains of fortifications from the First World War, the Mountain Warfare, when the bloody trench warfare of the Dolomite front raged here. Once at the top, the panoramic view is vast and impressive. After a while, we board the cable car down to the Passo Falzarego. From there, we take the bus back to our starting point.
