Caprile

On the way to the Passo Palade, an old farm has been transformed into an animal paradise that is accessible all year round

Caprile (Gfrill) is the name of the small holiday resort in the forest, which still belongs to the municipality of Tesimo below, but extends towards the 1,518 metres high Passo Palade. The road that winds its way from the Merano basin up to the mountain pass is one of South Tyrol's panoramic roads and a masterpiece of engineering. A century ago, when it was built, iron was mostly avoided and solid masonry constructions were used. Impressive bridges and viaducts, the typical roadside verges and old road-keeper's cottages characterise it today.

The village with 100 inhabitants itself begins at the St. Nicholas Church with its beautiful frescoes and high altar. It dates back to the 13th century and, like the entire village, is located on the left below the road and the Gfrillerhof Inn. Here, at an altitude of more than 1,000 m, nature reigns, impressing with the silence of the woods in summer and a thick blanket of snow in winter.

Hikes take you to the Monte Luco, along the Mill Trail to Zwingenberg Castle or to the most popular excursion destination for families with children: the Raingut Farm. The ancient farm has been transformed into an animal paradise where horses and goats, fallow deer and geese, emus and camels cavort today. As an excursion destination, it offers roasted chestnuts in autumn, cool refreshment in summer and sometimes a very special Advent performance at Christmas time.
