San Paolo

The picturesque vine-growing village of San Paolo nestles in the heart of vineyards and orchards and is guarded by its mighty parish church.

San Paolo, located at 394 m asl, is a particularly beautiful village, as it is characterised by a series of castles and historic mansions spread over the area. The majestic San Paolo Conversion parish church is the centre of the village. Due to its considerable dimensions it is sometimes even called “the rural cathedral”, as it could be literally translated. In fact, its size is referable to its builders who wanted to give expression to the prosperity and wealth of the aristocrats that have settled down in San Paolo.

However, there are some more sights to be visited in the village, such as Castel Warth or the ruins of Castelvecchio. One of the main events that has been taking place since 1998 in San Paolo are the Wine Culture Weeks, which have become a rather famous wine event.

Highlight of this gastronomic event is an open-air dinner on an enormous board in the centre of the village. On this occasion the starred chef Herbert Hintner serves specially created dishes. Moreover, every two years in the centre of San Paolo, there is a huge village fair called “Paulsner Dorffest”. In Christmas time, however, the narrow alleys are decorated with Christmas cribs in every forms and colours.
