Appiano Monte

As small as Appiano Monte is, you will find several castles, a museum and a golf course in this panoramic village

In the west of the municipality of Appiano are the houses of the small district of Appiano Monte (Eppan Berg). In between are the volunteer fire brigade and several beautiful castles and manor houses, which can also be visited. One of these is Palù-Schulthaus Castle with its late Gothic paintings, which opened its doors to the public a few years ago. It shows its well-preserved rooms and marvellous frescoes in the Museum for Medieval Culture of Living.

Another estate is Freudenstein Castle, also known as Lodron Castle. The building itself is impressive: It dates back to the 13th century and houses a castle chapel dedicated to St. Andrew. Today, it serves as a congress and recreation centre, but is probably most famous for its Golf Academy with its extensive driving range, 16 teeing grounds and four practice fairways. It is a training centre and is the ideal supplement to the new Appiano Golf Club in Riva di Sotto.

Appiano Monte is the youngest district of Appiano on the Wine Road - until recently it was still part of San Michele. Although the village centre extends above the mild valley floor at an altitude of about 450 metres, it then reaches up to the mighty Mendola Ridge with the Mendola Pass. You can explore this area on foot along the Mendola Trail, which leads through the forests of Caldaro and Appiano. In these forests you can find an interesting natural phenomenon: the Ice Holes.
