The Nativity Scene Museum tells of the valley’s long tradition of wood carving, which also includes Christmas nativity scenes
Lutago is the first village you come to in the Valle Aurina. The village centre consists of small shops, cafés, and the bus stop, so you can easily reach all the other places in the valley in summer and the ski resorts in winter, even without a car. The parish church, however, the landmark of this holiday destination, stands on a hill surrounded by mountain meadows, a little way off.
It is dedicated to two plague saints: Saint Sebastian and Saint Roch. The farms of Lutago - Luttach, as it is called in German - extend far up the steep, wooded slopes on the southern side of the Zillertal Alps. These sunny slopes are part of the Sasso Nero, Lutago's local mountain, a popular destination for experienced glacier hikers and ski tourers. In the village itself, you can experience horse trekking, and horse-drawn carriage rides are also available in the surrounding area.
For a slightly different experience, visit the Maranatha Nativity Scene Museum, which includes an artist's studio. An entire room here is dedicated to mask carving, as the masks with witches' and devils' faces are not only valuable but are still worn today during the traditional Krampus parade. In winter, Lutago is ideally situated between the two ski resorts of the Skiworld Ahrntal.
Speikboden is three kilometres down the valley, and Klausberg is eight kilometres away. Moreover, from "Luchta", as the locals call it, you can plan a tobogganing trip. The Lutago toboggan and ski route, which starts directly in the Speikboden Skiing Area, leads ten kilometres down from the top station to Lutago. As one of South Tyrol's longest toboggan runs, it can also be covered with artificial snow - a unique Valle Aurina holiday experience.
