Trens

For centuries, people have made pilgrimages to the “Trenser Mutter”, the pilgrimage church in the spiritual centre of Trens

"Torrentes" was first mentioned in 827 AD. As the story goes, about six centuries later, a farmer found a completely undamaged statue of the Virgin Mary under the debris of a landslide. He took it home with him, but it had disappeared by the next morning. After a long search, he finally found it in the village chapel next to the church, where it was soon revered as the "Trenser Mutter", the "Mother of Trens". It is a fact that in 1345, in the French city of Avignon, then the papal seat, an indulgence was granted for the construction of a Marian church.

Maria Trens developed into a well-known place of pilgrimage, which, a few decades later, was adorned with a graceful statue of the Madonna from the circle of the Ulm master Hans Multscher. Today, Trens and Campo di Trens together form the centre of the municipality where the Valle Isarco meets the Upper Valle Isarco. The two village centres almost merge into one another.

Behind the houses of Trens, the slopes of the Sarentino Alps begin to rise. You can explore this mountain landscape on a hike from Trens to the Giogo di Trens. The summit is reachable via the Plitschalm, a not managed hut, on a hike lasting several hours and provides wide-ranging views of the surrounding valleys. For families, the newly designed Bee Trail or a ride on the Upper Valle Isarco Cycle Path are ideal options. Also within walking distance is Tasso Castle, called Reifenstein.

It is one of the most historically valuable castles in South Tyrol and rises on a rocky hill in Pruno. While the castle opens its gates to visitors and provides a look inside its dungeon and interior rooms, climbing is available at the foot of the complex. It features a climbing garden with routes up to grade 5a. Incidentally, the Blieger Pond near Trens, a wetland habitat with alders, willows and poplars, is one of five designated natural monuments in Campo di Trens.
