Martello di Dentro

Perfectly groomed cross-country ski tracks and Lake Gioveretto, a high alpine reservoir, characterise the rear part of the Val Martello

The head of the Val Martello is a place of incomparable natural beauty, where several mountain huts and hiking destinations are gathered. Livi Hut, Genziana Hut, Martello Hut and Nino Corsi Hut - all these mountain huts are located in this high alpine area, where ibex, chamois and marmots live. From Santa Maria alla Fonderia, the road leads uphill in hairpin bends to the hikers' car park at Lake Gioveretto. The glacier giants of the Ortles Group are reflected in the water.

The lake is the starting point for the Plima Gorge Trail, which leads up to the Nino Corsi Mountain Hut. By the way, when pronouncing this hut in German, Zufallhütte, the emphasis is on the second syllable: Zufàllhütte. If you want to try a summit, Mt. Dosso di Peder offers an easy ascent and a splendid panoramic view. The mountain tour to the Cima Rossa di Martello or to the glacier at the Cima Gioveretto is more difficult, but both of them are worth the effort once you have reached the top. In winter, the landscape in Martello di Dentro (Hintermartell) transforms into a paradise for cross-country skiers with the Martello Nordic Ski Centre, for snowshoe hikers and for ski tourers.

At the waterfalls at the head of the valley and at the Konzentschatter Waterfall, on the other hand, ice climbers can be seen looking for a foothold on the slippery ground with crampons and ice axes. We would like to recommend something special for the Christmas season: the Genziana Mountain Hut in the middle of the Stelvio National Park. This is where one of the most enchanting Christmas Markets in South Tyrol and the highest Christmas Market in the Alps takes place. It is small, but offers many a South Tyrolean delicacy, handicrafts and farm products. Part of it is also the living nativity scene on the slightly higher Livi Hut, which you can reach on foot or by horse-drawn sleigh.
