In South Tyrol, the German name Tisens refers to two different places: One is the municipality above Nalles and Lana in the Merano region, called Tesimo in Italian, and the other is this small mountain village near Castelrotto - Tisana. The latter has preserved its rural charm to this day.
The houses and farms are clustered around the Church of Saint Nicholas. Inside, it features a remarkable sky-blue ceiling. The exterior facade is adorned with a large fresco that, interestingly, does not depict the church's patron saint, but Saint Christopher. Surrounded by the backdrop of the Punta Santner peakl and the Sciliar Massif, which protect Tisana from the wind, hikes, cycle tours, horse rides and walks through the forest await you.
One of the paths leads to the Tagusa School Museum, another hamlet of Castelrotto, which tells the story of the era of single-classroom schools in South Tyrol. From Siusi, which is easy to reach by bus, the Alpe di Siusi Cable Car will take you directly up to the Siusi Alp. In half an hour, you can be standing on Europe's largest high-alpine pasture, enjoying its impressive panorama.
In winter, tranquillity returns to Tisana - the cows that usually graze on the pastures around the village are then in their home stables. Winter hiking trails lead through the countryside and into the surrounding hamlets. The nearby Alpe di Siusi Skiing Area - the valley station is five kilometres away - becomes a popular destination for tobogganers, cross-country skiers, snowshoers, and skiers. A more leisurely option is a horse-drawn sleigh ride, with the gentle sound of sleigh bells.
