The village with the tallest church tower in the region also has a sports centre for bowling, bouldering and swimming
Castelrotto village (Kastelruth Dorf) is situated in a sheltered position between the Calvary and Mt. Bullaccia, right at the foot of the Siusi Alp. From a castle called "Castel ruptum", Castelrotto developed over the centuries into the most important centre in the Sciliar area. An expression of this significance is the tower of the Parish Church of St. Peter and Paul which, at 82 metres high, stands taller than any other building in the wider area. Today, it is located on the Piazza Kraus.
Around this historic square you can find inviting cafés, small shops and museums such as the Museum of Traditional Costumes. Two alleys away rises the Spatzen Museum, which tells the success story of the "Kastelruther Spatzen", whose folk music also made the village's name famous throughout the German-speaking world. Every year in autumn, the "Kastelruther Spatzen" Festival takes place nearby, with the Sciliar and the Alpe di Siusi providing an impressive backdrop.
On the southern side of the village, the Laranza Forest begins, which invites exploration with the "King's Keep" viewpoint called "Königswarte", and the Mushroom Path. Above the meadows on the eastern edge of the village, the slope then rises to the Marinzen Mountain Hut: It is a popular destination for hikers and mountain bikers. The hut, located in the middle of the Sciliar-Catinaccio Nature Park, can also be reached comfortably via the Marinzen Cable Car.
When autumn turns to winter, Castelrotto glows with festive lights. The Castelrotto Mountain Christmas creates a charming atmosphere with music and local handicrafts. The ski slopes and cross-country ski tracks in the Alpe di Siusi area can be easily reached from here by bus.
