Salonetto

The neat centre of Salonetto is dominated by its St. Valentine Church, a little baroque village church dating back to 1769

Salonetto lies on a sunny slope west of Meltina at 1,150 metres a.s.l., seen here in the background behind the neighbouring village of Frassineto.

Like all sunny locations, this area was settled already in early times: In the 13th century, Salonetto was first mentioned as “Slaneik”.

A direct line into the Adige Valley is the cable car that connects Salonetto (Schlaneid) near Meltina with Vilpiano, a district of Terlano, in four minutes.

The “new” St. Valentine Church with its wooden tower is dedicated to St. Valentine of Terni, a simple Baroque building from the 18th century.

The altarpiece with Bishop Valentine is by Franz Unterberger from Cavalese, the Stations of the Cross panels made in 1770 AD by Josef Sparer.

There is also an “old” St. Valentine Church, a predecessor building in the Valtes Forest (Valteswald), only the remains of walls are left - archaeological walks are offered on certain days.

Behind the village rise the Tessa Group and Mt. Ivigna (right), the southernmost elevation in the western ridge of the Sarentino Alps, before it slopes down to the broad ridge of the Monzoccolo.

It is located a little below the village of Salonetto (Schlaneid), the mountain station of the Meltina Cable Car: In just four minutes it takes you from Vilpiano in the Adige Valley to the high plateau of the Monzoccolo or vice versa, including panoramic views on the valley, the Oltradige area and the villages of the municipality of Meltina. Salonetto itself extends in the midst of meadows and forests at an altitude of considerably more than 1,000 metres a.s.l.

In the middle of the centre stands the Church of St. Valentine, a simple baroque building that replaced the previously existing church in the Valtes Forest just outside of Salonetto. Its remains were uncovered around 1900 and can be visited again today. Another little church is a popular panoramic site: St. Ulrich in Gschleier between Salonetto and Meltina invites you to take a seat on its wooden bench and breathe deeply amidst the South Tyrolean mountains.

Hikers and families, mountain bikers and Nordic walkers appreciate the remote village because of its good connections. The hiking paths start right outside the door and mainly take you to the surrounding alpine pastures and mountain huts. An excursion leads to the Leadner Hut and the Möltner Kaser in the Sarentino Alps, a hut with mountain pasture farming and South Tyrolean specialities. Gschnofer Stall and Tschaufenhaus are also names of managed alpine huts that are often also open in winter, when the surroundings are ideal for snowshoe and winter hikes.
